About

Dub Bossman is a slang term used to describe a win in football, dub being a deviation of "W," meaning win. It is mostly used in the context of calling the person who collected the win "bossman," a slang term meaning winner or champion. In 2020, the term became a pseudo nickname for UK YouTube channel host Robbie Lyle, who has been the subject of numerous memes referring to him as the "Dub Bossman" on Twitter. Memes of Lyle typically feature an image formatted like a Snapchat image, with a black-barred caption across the center of the frame. In the image, Lyle is commenting on a "dub" or win.

Origin

The origin of the phrase "dub bossman" is unknown and likely predates its internet usage. On September 6th, 2018, Twitter[1] user @DL_CoachBryson tweeted the earliest known usage of the phrase (shown below). They wrote, "Man that was good. I hope all has been well with the Longhorns! Congrats on your first dub bossman!"

Spread

In February 2020, the phrase grew in popularity. For example, on February 3rd, 2020, YouTuber JosephCFC18 posted the video "Insistence Season 2 Episode 5: scrumptious dub bossman." The post received more than 1,500 views in less than one year (shown below, left). The thumbnail for the video features a photograph of Robbie Lyle pouring champagne.

That month, other references to Lyle as "dub bossman" grew in usage. On February 8th, 2020, Twitter[2] user @rara_blacksheep responded to a photograph of Lyle with "dub bossman (shown below, right).
