About

Marenheit 451 is a charity art pack promoting freedom of speech and freedom of art organized by fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic on /mlp/ board of 4chan. The purpose of the art pack was to protest against the censorship on Derpibooru enforced after brony community negatively reacted to BLM art and it was covered by The Atlantic article.

Art pack timeline:

  • Project start – 27/06/20
  • Art submissions deadline – 15/07/20
  • Donations deadline – 08/08/20

Total earnings were $21132.94: $1200 went to Comic Book Legal Defence Fund, the rest ($19932.94) went to Days End Farm Horse Rescue Charity
This was an absolute record for brony charity art packs, two times higher than the whole series of previous records (Clop For A Cause).

Origin

Infuriated by the new Derpibooru politics on "controversial" images /mlp/ users started to discuss what can be done to counter it and one anon proposed to create a protest art pack featuring Aryanne. The idea was highly appreciated and further discussions were held in the dedicated series of 20+ threads that started shortly after.

Despite the original idea of specifically making an Aryanne related art pack, the scope was then extended to being about free speech in general (SFW & NSFW), though, works still mainly featured Aryanne. The artpack was originally unnamed, then it got name Fahreheigh 451, and finally Marenheit 451 as a reference to the world-famous dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 depicting the society burning books that are offensive to someone.

By the time of soft art submission deadline (11/07/20) anons started to proposing covers for the art pack with the main image being a reference to the Fahrenheit 451's fire man. By the time of hard deadline (15/07/20) the art pack consisted of 200+ arts and 6 stories created by 120+ artists.

Donations were enabled on E-Junkie 16/07/20 in parallel with Marenheit 451 Afterparty stream and resulted in $6k+ earnings over the first 6 hours. The initially chosen charities were Comic Book Legal Defence Fund and Days End Farm Horse Rescue Charity, however, shortly after the start the former was rejected as controversial due to its recent changes in politics, so it got only $1200 of the earnings. The art pack was deplatformed (supposedly by Discord raid led by OrOch1) from E-Junkie on 20/07/20, after which the art pack was placed on Selz and deplatformed from it after 20 minutes, finally the art pack was hosted on the dedicated site. This series of deplatformings further enhanced the fans' will to support the art pack, so they did a second big round of donations, raising a total amount of earnings over $10k. The meme amount of $14880 was reached on 03/08/20, and the final big round of donations occurred during the ending stream (part 1, part 2) on 08/08/20, making a total amount of $21132.94.

Verity

During the donations art pack organizers requested a video of snout petting, and after a while they received a video featuring one of the horses rescued by charity – Verity. She got ponified and became the second mascot of the art pack with dedicated to her art.

Spread

The art pack got promotional videos by Big Man Tyrone (4chan /mlp/ Charity Event to Piss Off Twitter) and Princess Shitposter (🐎 Marenheit 451 Art Pack ❤️).
Equestria Daily rejected to cover the art pack due to its controversy and NSFW content.
Horse News released the article (The Final Solution: Cleansing the Fandom of Channer Scum) mentioning Marenheit 451 art pack.
The art pack was discussed on Everypony (Marenheit 451: Freedom of speech or Death), Fimfiction (Marenheit 451 art pack) and in Twitter accounts of various artists.

Criticism

The charity was criticized for not donating money to BIPOC, for caring more about animals and having excess love for them, because Hitler was also a big animal lover.
