About

Nodding Lady, also known as Nodding Woman, refers to a woman sitting behind President Donald Trump during a Town Hall event who continually nodded at everything Trump said throughout the event, distracting audience members and raising suspicions that she was a plant placed there by the Trump campaign. The woman was identified as Mayra Joli, an immigration attorney and outspoken Trump supporter from Florida who once ran for congress as an independent.

Origin

On October 15th, 2020, NBC held a Town Hall event in which audience members could ask questions to the President, while ABC had Joe Biden doing the same. During Trump's Town Hall, viewers were distracted by an out-of-focus woman who continued to nod enthusiastically to everything the President said (clip shown below).

Spread

Though Trump nor moderator Savannah Guthrie acknowledged the woman, viewers expressed that the woman was distracting and suspected she may have been a plant. Twitter user @TomNichols[1] posted several tweets throughout the evening about the woman, remarking on her enthusiasm to what he viewed as Trump non-answers (shown below, left). User @KeithEdwards[2] voiced his suspicion that the woman was planted there by the Trump campaign, gaining over 90 retweets and 1,300 likes (shown below, right).

The woman was later identified as Mayra Joli, a Trump-supporting immigration lawyer who once ran for congress in Miami, by Alex Daugherty of the Miami Herald (shown below, left).[5][3] This furthered suspicion that she was a plant who was placed in the audience by the Trump campaign. User @UsHadrons[4] posted images of Joli with prominent conservative figures, including Mike Pence, while wearing a MAGA hat, gaining over 2,100 retweets and 4,200 likes (shown below, right).
