About

"It's Called We Do a Little Trolling" is a memorable quote uttered by Donald Trump during a 2020 presidential campaign rally in which he says declared that he liked to "troll" his political opponents' primary elections. The phrase became popular among Trump and QAnon supporters online, and saw an increase in use in early 2021.

Origin

On March 2nd, 2020, President Donald Trump held a rally in North Carolina, where at one point he says "we do a little trolling, it's called we do a little trolling" (clip shown below).^[1] His use of the phrase was reported on March 3rd by multiple news outlets, including The Guardian.^[2]

Spread

The phrase gained considerable popularity among Trump supporters and criticism from opposers, used occasionally in post titles and tweets starting the day it happened.^[5][6] The phrase is often used to shitpost, uploaded alongside seemingly unrelated images and GIFs on social media platforms like iFunny and Twitter.

On January 6th, 2021, @magmashice uploaded an animated music video featuring the trollface and other memes to Twitter and YouTube^[8] titled, "WE DO A LITTLE TROLLING," garnering over 1,200 views on the former and 10,400 on the latter (shown below).

On January 9th, @tacoswithasix tweeted^[9] an image macro featuring the phrase, garnering over 380 likes in just over 2 weeks (shown below, left). On January 12th, /u/PettyOfficerHaskell posted an image macro featuring a variation of the phrase to /r/homestuck,^[10] garnering over 650 upvotes in 10 days (shown below, right).

On January 20th, 2021, @jschlatt tweeted,^[3] "Happy to announce that I have been sworn in as the 46th President of the United States" garnering over 287,000 likes and 10,900 retweets in 2 days. That day, @apandahvevo commented with the video of Trump talking about trolling, gaining over 72,000 views. Schlatt replied to the comment,^[4] "we do a little trolling it's called we do a little trolling" garnering over 9,100 likes in the same brought span of time (shown below).

By January 22nd the phrase began to see increased use on Twitter. On January 22nd, @MT_Kitsune uploaded a video of a dancing cat accompanied by the phrase to Twitter,^[7] garnering over 5,700 views in an hour (shown below).

We Engage In A Mild Amount of Tomfoolery

The phrase began to change around April of 2021, with meme creators posting the phrase 'We Engage In A Mild Amount of Tomfoolery' with various different reaction images and faces used instead of the typical trollface. The evolution of the phrase was recorded in a meme posted by iFunny user coconuts__28^[11] on April 28th, 2021 (shown below).
