'Application.exe has stopped working' is an error message that appears whenever a computer is unable to continue running an application in Microsoft Windows, which is perhaps the most used operating system in the world. Since many iterations of Microsoft Windows are prone to frequent crashing, this message is seen quite frequently, and as such, it has seeped into popular culture through the mere-exposure effect.

It is often referred to when someone acts in a way that seems like they're giving up at acting normally, whether due to frustration, surprise, or any other emotion. In YouTube videos, it is often accompanied by blocks of screen tear/static or other "glitch effects" for comedic effect.

It has also inspired photoshop-spoofed fake error messages, often with jokes hidden in the text that, when in a video, cannot be read without pausing the video. This is similar to, and often accompanied by, a spoofed Blue Screen of Death.
