This meme originates from software companies desiring an "official" look for their product by presenting a 3D graphic of a hypothetical box the software could come in. Often, the software was download-only.
Often done in Photoshop.
Dedicated software to create fake software boxes exists, and ironically "comes in" a fake software box.
