About

Finally, A Kid Without A Phone, also known as Kids Without Smartphones, refers to a catchphrase used in a series of image caption memes, image macros, videos and jokes showing young children in mischievous situations like smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol, ironically labelling them better than using a smartphone. The jokes mock the stereotype that younger generations obsessively use their cellphones, commonly held by many older people, particularly boomers. The memes started in early 2024 on Facebook, gaining traction on Twitter / X, Instagram and TikTok going into 2025.

Origin

Although the exact origin of the catchphrase it's unknown, on January 28th, 2024, the Facebook[1] meme page Ratchet Stolen MeMe’s That Won’t Die posted a viral image of two German kids drinking something that looks like beer during a football game, captioning it, "Finally some children without cell phones," which amassed roughly 12,000 likes and 17,000 reposts in a year.

Spread

The catchphrase was popularized on social media among Spanish, Portuguese and French-speaking netizens over the next few months, mostly sharing images or videos of kids doing adult things and ironically treating them like a better option than using smartphones.

For example, on December 19th, 2024, X[2] user @rodristruly posted two pictures of a kid trying to open a champagne bottle, captioning it, "finally a kid without a phone.” The post (seen below) amassed over 42,000 views and 1,600 likes in five months.
