About
French Girls is a mobile application that allows users to upload selfie photographs for other random users to create an illustration off of. The app is named after a memorable quote from the 1997 period drama film Titanic, in which the character Rose (played by Kate Winslet) tells her love interest "Draw me like one of your French girls".
History
On March 23rd, 2013, the mobile software company APPEK released an iOS[4] app titled “French Girls,” which allows its anonymous users to draw sketch portraits of strangers and upload their own photos for others to draw.
Online Presence
On January 9th, 2014, the Fresh Girls App Tumblr[3] blog was launched, which highlights notable example drawings made with the application (shown below). On March 1st, The Daily Dot[2] published an article about French Girls, referring to it as "the best selfie app."
On March 28th, the "French Girls App" Facebook[5] page was launched, which received upwards of 7,100 likes over the next year. On July 7th, the Internet humor blog Smosh[1] highlighted 29 humorous illustrations created with the iPhone app (shown below). On July 28th, Mashable[6] published an article about French Girls, featuring several drawings created in the App.
