Gia Crying refers to a scene from the pilot of the HBO teen drama Euphoria, where protagonist Rue's younger sister Gia (played by Storm Reid) finds Rue unconscious and starts crying. The meme is typically used as an image macro or reaction image to depict someone's reaction to drug use and is often used to ironically dramatize an event.
Origin
The pilot episode of Euphoria aired on June 16th, 2019, and saw Gia (played by Storm Reid) finding an unconscious Rue (played by Zendaya) and crying (seen below).[1]
The earliest known use of the image as a meme or reaction image is a February 7th, 2021 post by X[2] user @Xian_Bell that read, "You pop one pill and yo friends who only smoke or drink be in the corner looking at u like this 🙄." The post gathered over 120,000 likes in two years (seen below).
Spread
The image saw continued use in the early 2020s, with X[3] user @houseofphoton posting it on August 2nd, 2023, and gathering over 6,000 likes in a year (seen below, left). On March 12th, 2024, X[4] user @thatgirlbamz posted a GIF of the scene, gathering over 26,000 likes in three months (seen below, right).
The meme saw a sharp rise in popularity on July 8th, 2024, with Threads[5] user @meme.lawd.kenya posting the image with the caption, "Me if I worked at The Bear bc they’re always yelling," and gathering over 5,000 likes in two days (seen below, left).
Also on July 8th, X[6] user @unbreakopal's post gathered over 90,000 likes in two days (seen below, right). The post read, "me when my mutuals talk about doing any drug harder than weed."
