About

Grand Theft Auto V Roleplaying Mods refer to mods where players take on an identity of a character and voice and act like the character in the servers. Numerous mods allow for various levels of customization, including original cars, maps, and weapons.

History

Grand Theft Auto 5 roleplay mods began seeing attention in the summer of 2015, with one of the first popular mods being GTA:RPG, created by LogicSpawn. The mod added skill trees and dialogue options to the game.[5][6]

FiveM

FiveM is a community-driven Grand Theft Auto 5 Mod for online multiplayer. It grew popular with streamers on Twitch as players used the mod's servers to to roleplay as original characters.

FiveM was built by the CitizenFX Collective[1][2] and launched in 2016.[2] Prior to the launch of the mod, developers were banned from Grant Theft Auto 5 and other Rockstar games.[3] The mode allows users to create custom cars, characters, maps, and weapons. Of note, it does not affect a player's proper Grand Theft Auto 5 installation, so players will not be banned from Grand Theft Auto 5 Online for using the mod. A server can have up to 32 players.

NoPixel

In March of 2019, NoPixel grew into one of the most popular servers for the GTA 5 mod GTA RP.[4] This was thanks in part to a community of Twitch streamers doing roleplay mods on NoPixel. In particular, GreekGodX returned to a character named TayTay, which he played with in 2016, on On March 15th (shown below, left).

To join NoPixel, players must fill out an application explaining their character and how said character would react in certain situations.[7] Players on the server can not break character. Kotaku has praised the stream of Sodapoppin, who plays as a hapless man named Kevin attempting to be an honest worker in Los Santos.

The popularity of the streams caused the NoPixel server to close admissions as it was flooded with 4,000 applications.[8] It also helped Grand Theft Auto 5 to become the third most popular game on Twitch in early March, only behind Fortnite and League of Legends. [9]
