Gundam Guy refers to a viral story about a woman who reported that a man on Instagram messaged her asking if she wanted to see a picture of his Gundam. To her surprise, he actually did show her pictures of model Gundam Mechas he had completed. Eventually, the pair met and later married.

Origin

On March 24th, 2016, Twitter user @mitsurutenma^[1], real name Elle Howley, tweeted that a "random Instagram dude" had messaged her saying he was going to DM her a picture of his Gundam. She posted a reaction image of a monkey looking sad to express her exasperation at the DM (shown below, left). However, later that day, she posted her surprise to receive pictures of actual model Gundams the man had made (shown below, right).

Over the following months, @mitsurutenma would post updates about the relationship between her and "Gundam Guy." On April 24th,^[2] she reported that she had met him and joked she "might marry him" (shown below, left). On November 21st, 2017, she reported that "Gundam Guy" had proposed to her and that she had accepted, joking that she would be "Mrs. Gundam"^[3] (shown below, right). At this point, Daily Dot^[4] covered the story. The woman later clarified that she had attended high school with the "Gundam Guy," but they had not talked until March of 2016.

On August 1st, 2019, Howley reported on Instagram^[5] that the two had married (shown below, left). On August 4th, she reported on Twitter^[6] that she had eloped with Gundam Guy because they couldn't wait to be married but also because she wanted to be on his health insurance in order to see New York City doctors to treat her debilitating case of endometriosis.
