Origin

On October 21st, 2019, the YouTube account for the hate5six published a video of the band Harm's Way performing at the This Is Hardcore festival at Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 26th, 2019. At about 9 minutes and 20 seconds into the video, the singer performs the dance seen in the meme. Within one year, the video received more than 652,000 views (shown below).

Facebook [2] user Seth Robinson published the earliest known version of the meme in the digitalprison Facebook group on March 21st, 2020. The video features a smartphone recording of the YouTube video set to the song "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root (screenshot below).

On May 2nd, 2020, the Facebook [1] group "Harm's Way running man to various songs" launched. Their first video, a remix with the song "Centerfold" by J. Geils Band, received more than 2,500 views in three days (shown below).

That day, the group published the video remix "Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald OST – Wild Battle Theme." Within one week, the video received more than 300,000 views, 6,600 shares, 3,800 reactions and 1,800 comments (shown below, left).

The following day, the group published a remix with the song from the Neon Genesis Evangelion soundtrack "A Cruel Angel's Thesis." The video received more than 303,000 views, 7,800 shares, 3,800 reactions and 1,300 comments in less than two days (shown below, right).

Over the next three days, the group grew in popularity, receiving more than 38,000 follower and 33,000 likes.
