About
Hideo Kojima Feet Scans or Hideo Kojima's Foot Fetish refers to a series of memes about video game developer Hideo Kojima scanning celebrities' feet into his video games and allegedly having a foot fetish in general. The memes stem from a 2015 clip of actress Stefanie Joosten, who plays the character Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V, encountering her character lying in a bed and kicking her feet in the air while playing the game on-stream, revealing that Kojima scanned the bottoms of her feet during development. Memes about Kojima scanning celebrities' feet for his games continued over the following years as he developed Death Stranding and its sequel.
Origin
In the 2015 video game Metal Gear Solid V, actress Stefanie Joosten plays the character Quiet. She performed the voice for the character and also the motion capture, which involved extensive scanning.[1] In 2015, Joosten streamed Metal Gear Solid V, although the streams have only been partially archived.[2]
Speculation that Hideo Kojima has a foot fetish began to spread online as early as 2019.
For example, on November 19th, 2019, YouTuber[3] Felice uploaded a video of an easter egg in Kojima's game Death Stranding where, if you zoom in on Sam's feet during a cutscene, a monster made of black goo with glasses similar to Kojima's grabs his feet. Some people speculate that the monster is meant to be Kojima.
Some screenshots that purportedly show Kojima liking foot-related content on X / Twitter also started spreading online as early as 2021.[4]
On September 15th, 2022, YouTuber[5] coresmos posted a meme using a clip from one of Stefanie Joosten's MGS V streams in which she encounters her character, Quiet, kicking her feet in the air. Joosten reveals that Kojima had the underside of her feet scanned during the game's development. The video gained over 250,000 views in three years.
Spread
Memes about Kojima's hypothesized foot fetish and about him scanning feet became increasingly popularized throughout the 2020s. On October 8th, 2022, Kojima posted two photos of Elle Fanning in a motion capture scanning device, barefoot, to X,[6] garnering over 59,000 likes in three years.
On July 17th, 2023, X[7] user @TopGyaru posted a screenshot purporting to show Kojima retweeting anime art prominently featuring feet, which was reposted to the /r/SummerTimeRendering[8] subreddit on December 26th, garnering over 690 likes on the former and 2,900 upvotes on the latter in roughly two years.

On May 19th, 2025, X[9] user @VTuberFeetFan posted the edit by coresmos as a response to gameplay footage of Death Stranding 2 featuring VTuber Pekora's appearance in the game, writing, "Do you… do you think Kojima did the same for Pekora? 😳" garnering over 3,400 likes in a month.
On June 9th, Instagram[10] user ya.kihito posted a meme about Kojima scanning feet that uses footage from Death Stranding 2 of a barefoot character, garnering over 49,000 likes in four days.
On June 12th, 2025, Redditor u/Every_Policy1168 posted a screenshot to the /r/DeathStranding[11] subreddit, titled "Now we understand why she was barefoot on photoshoot." The screenshot shows a comment left under Kojima's 2022 Elle Fanning post directly referencing his feet scans, garnering over 1,500 upvotes in a day.
