On October 2nd, 2023, X[1] user @sk1tguru posted a tweet that read, "that phase where you slowly start hating your girlfriend is crazy😭," gathering over 100,000 retweets and 170,000 likes in a year. The post inspired a series of meme where men joke about how difficult it is having to call or comfort their girlfriends during this "phase."
In September 2024, TikTokers began sharing memes and jokes about how much they hate their boyfriends, posting videos that overlap with the Henry Danger trend that grew popular around the same time.
On September 8th, TikToker[2] @dontgafnga posted a video captioned, "When I get caught cheating so I gotta bring up my dog that passed in 2018," alongside the hashtag #ihatemybf. The video gathered over 900,000 plays and 200,000 likes in a month.
