About

Kevin Ghidorah is the nickname of the left-most head of King Ghidorah, a three-headed dragon and the main antagonist in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The head, less serious than the other two, was nicknamed "Kevin" by director Michael Doughtery, and has inspired jokes and fan art.

Origin

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla fights King Ghidorah, a three-headed dragon. Each of the heads has a distinct personality, with the left-most head being less serious-seeming than the other two. On June 2nd, 2019, Redditor RWT1998 made a post in the r/GODZILLA[8] subreddit titled "Who else named the left head kevin." The post contains an image of King Ghidorah with a head labeled "Kevin." The post received more than 460 points (98% upvoted) in less than two years (shown below).

On June 5th, 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty said on Twitter[1] that during production the other two heads were nicknamed Ichi and Ni (Japanese for One and Two), while the third was nicknamed Kevin (shown below).

Twitter users quickly responded with jokes and fan art about Kevin, depicting him as more simple-minded than the other two. In replies to Dougherty's tweet, users such as @PAriane11[2] and @Knapknapdraws[3] posted fan art of the character (shown below).

For example, Redditor Flarenite[4] posted a Why Can't You Just Be Normal edit about the character in /r/monsterverse, gaining over 400 points (shown below, left). Redditor Gojiratheking106[5] posted a Toothless Presents Himself edit in /r/Godzilla that gained over 600 points (shown below, right).

One of the most popular images used to mock Kevin was posted to DeviantArt on June 2nd, 2019 by MichaelJLarson,[6] before Dougherty revealed the nickname of the character (shown below, left). This became an object labeling template known as the Three Headed Dragon, which used the Kevin head as the punchline. For example, Reddit user giganawesome[7] used it to make a joke about Keanu Reeves, gaining over 22,700 upvotes in three weeks (shown below, right).
