About

Kinetic Sand ASMR Videos are a series of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response videos in which people cut, shape, and squish kinetic sand in order to trigger a tingling sensation in the viewer. Although Kinetic Sand ASMR could be found on YouTube as far back as 2013, Kinetic Sand AMSR videos gained widespread popularity through Instagram and YouTube in 2017 due to videos becoming more aesthetically pleasing with colored sand and custom shaping.

Origin

On October 17th, 2013, YouTuber ASMR HQ uploaded the first know ASMR Kinetic Sand video which features a set of hands molding the kinetic sand while whispering to the viewer. The video has gained over 763,300 views in nearly seven years.

Spread

In May 2013, Redditors began posting kinetic sand ASMR videos to subreddits such as r/asmr[1] and r/oddlysatisfying.[2] Early videos were typically simple, featuring plain brown sand and un-choreographed movements. A shift in the kinetic sand video trend began in 2017 with the YouTube channel Sand Tagious who began introducing satisfying videos of kinetic sand in clean shapes and bright colors. On March 10th, 2017, San Tagious uploaded the most popular kinetic sand ASMR video which shows a person cleanly scooping sand with a melon baller (shown below). The video gained over 74.7 million views in two years. Many other YouTube channels began scooping and evenly cutting the sand to let it fall.

On May 16th, 2019, Instagram user satisfying.moment uploaded a kinetic sand cutting video highlighting the crunching sound the sand makes (shown below). The short video gained over 42,100 views in two months. As of July 2019, the hashtag #kineticsand is connected to over 303,000 posts.
