Dolly Parton Challenge, also known as the hashtag #DollyPartonChallenge and LinkedIn / Facebook / Instagram / Tinder Profile Pictures, refers to a series of four-panel images in which people share what could be their profile pictures for different social media accounts. The images, which became popular on Instagram after singer Dolly Parton posted four examples of profile pictures in January 2020, typically compare the differences in LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Tinder.

Origin

On January 21st, Dolly Parton posted four images of herself each with a social media platform label to Instagram^[1] with the caption, "Get you a woman who can do it all 😉" (shown below). The post gained over 409,700 likes in two days.

Precursor

In June 2016, many Twitter users compared photos they would post on their various social media accounts. Buzzfeed^[7] shared a list of some of them. For example, on June 23rd, Twitter user @lakakarachi^[8] tweeted four photos with the caption, "me on Linkedin vs me on Facebook vs me on Instagram vs me on snapchat" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 4,600 likes and 4,800 retweets in four years. On February 26th, 2017 Twitter user @heymichellelee^[9] posted a tweet that compared social media platforms to The Breakfast Club characters and received over 189,000 likes in two years (shown below, right).

Spread

On January 22nd, many celebrity Instagram accounts followed Parton's lead. For example, that day, Conan O'Brian posted a similar set of images to Instagram^[2] and garnered over 69,700 likes in a day (shown below, left). Ellen Degeneres also posted an example to Instagram^[3] which received over 1.3 million likes in a day.

That same day, Insider posted an example with the caption "We see you, @dollyparton. We raise you a Timothée Chalamet" to Instagram.^[4] The post accumulated over 8,600 likes in a day (shown below).

On January 24th, Ebaumsworld^[6] and Memebase^[5] published collections of Dolly Parton Challenge examples.
