Origin

On October 29th, 2010, YouTuber dope2111 uploaded the first popular Michael Jackson make-up transformation video which gained over 2.1 million views and 17,000 likes in nine years (shown below).



Spread

Over the next decade, many YouTube make-up artists uploaded their own Michael Jackson make-up tutorials (shown below). YouTuber Marina Mamic's tutorial gained over 1.3 million views in threes years (shown below, left).

On May 8th, 2019 TikTok user Laticia Gomes uploaded a sound clip of the Marina and the Diamonds[1] 2009 song "I Am Not a Robot" and used it in a Michael Jackson make-up transformation video. The song was used because a portion of the vocals in sound like Michael Jackson's signature "He He" sound. The video gained over one million likes and 132,900 shares in two weeks. That following week many other TikTok users used makeup and the song to imitate Jackson. TikTok user @babyjay0314's video gained over 789,700 likes (shown below, center) and @Daavid.Tv's video gained over 627,100 likes in two weeks (shown below, right).
