Mirai Nikki Yandere Face, also known as Yandere Trance, Yuno Face and Ecstatic Yandere Pose, is an exploitable image of yandere character Yuno Gasai from the 2011 anime Future Diary. Yuno's memorable facial expression has inspired an exploitable and redraw trend among Japanese artists on Pixiv that later spread to 4chan, Tumblr and DeviantArt.

Origin

On October 10th, 2011, episode one called "Sign Up" of the anime series Future Diary (jap. 未来日記, Mirai Nikki) premiered in Japan.^[1] In one scene of the episode, yandere character Yuno Gasai promises the character Yukiteru "Yukki" Amano, her object of desire, that she will protect him, with Yuno holding her face in her hands and her face flushing (clip shown below).

In the 2006 manga series, the respective panel appears in chapter two "The 12 Future Diary Holders" (shown below).^[2]

Spread

Following the release of the episode, a still image of Yuno holding her face spawned an exploitable and redraw trend among Japanese artists on Pixiv.^[3] Starting in 2008 and prior to the release of the episode on October 10th, 2011, several unrelated artworks in which characters did similar poses were posted on the platform.^[4][5][6]

On October 10th, 2011, Pixiv^[7][8][9] users しがない社会人, 由井＠石仮面 and Cochma＠修行中 posted the earliest three fan arts based on the still image (shown below).

In the following weeks, the trend gained spread as "恍惚のヤンデレポーズ", (jap. _ecstatic yandere pose). On October 29th, Pixiv^[10][11][12] users ささきち, ゆう and アヤメ posted exploitable templates for the format.

As of March 23rd, 2021, over 2,000 images tagged with the hashtag were uploaded to Pixiv.^[3] Pixiv Encyclopedia refers to the fad as "Yandere Trance."^[13]

Following the viral spread of the format among Japanese artists, the trend spread to artistic communities on DeviantArt, Tumblr and 4chan, sometimes being referred to as "yunoface" and "yuno trance."
