About

Nichijou (日常 Nichijō?, lit. Regular Life) is a manga created by Keiichi Arawi that was adapted into an anime in 2011. It chronicles the daily life of a group of high school students. Nichijou has a fairly large fanbase, and it has created some memes, as well as MADs[1].

History

Nichijou was serialized in 2006 by Kadokawa Shoten in the manga magazine Shōnen Ace, and was also serialized in Comptiq between the March 2007 and July 2008 issues. In 2011, the series was given an anime adaptation that was produced by the studio Kyoto Animation. Two seasons were created from April to September of 2011 with 26 episodes being created. The English audience can legally view English subtitled episodes of the anime online at Crunchy Roll, which is referred to as "My Ordinary Life".

Reception

Although the Nichijou anime currently has a decently large fanbase, it has been reported that it had rather low BD and DVD sales. According to animation director Shunji Suzuki, Nichijou did not come close to meeting the break even line. 924 copies of the first DVD volume were sold in its first week, whereas the second and fourth BD volumes sold over 2,000 copies each in their first week.

Carl Kimlinger of Anime News Network reviewed the first seven episodes and gave it a B, calling the anime a "slice-of-life comedy with a penchant for lunacy and a taste for huggable cuteness; a rare chance to see talented animators fully indulging their love of the art."
