About
Ms. Murphy is an English teacher in California who garnered online attention when she began a Twitter thread showing memes her students made to roast her and her class at the end of the school year in May of 2019.
Origin
On May 31st, 2019, Twitter user @magicalmsmurphy, an English teacher in California with the handle Angelina Murphy,[1] began a Twitter thread[2] saying "I give students the option to submit memes about the school year or our class and we look at them on the last day of class. They usually take this opportunity to roast me, which I don’t mind 😂 They really outdid themselves this year 😭😂 so here’s a thread of our memes!" Her first tweet gained over 34,000 retweets and 170,000 likes (shown below)
Spread
Over the following days, Murphy added several other tweets with memes her students made poking fun at her or the class.[3] Memes posted include jokes about how Murphy can only see out of one eye and other various tics of her classroom (examples shown below).
Twitter users commented on the wholesomeness of Murphy's practice. User @msblackteach replied, "I love so much that you teach HS and I can tell by their memes that they still embrace “kid” things like popsicle sticks, morning greetings, & silly names teachers make up like “do-nows”. 💞," gaining over 2,400 likes (shown below, left). User @kriola_fofa617 stated her daughter said she needed a teacher like Ms. Murphy, gaining over 460 likes (shown below, right). The thread was covered by Twitter Moments[3] and Mashable.[1]
