On February 26, 2012, NASCAR was forced to postpone the 2012 Daytona 500 due to heavy rain. (The cars are not set up to be able to run on wet or damp tracks) After the announcement, a post was made on the Midweek Motorsport Listeners Collective Facebook page, showing an Audi racing at the 24 Hours of LeMans in heavy rain, with the caption "Your race got delayed by rain? That's cute." Midweek Motorsport is a weekly podcast from Radiolemans.com that covers the world of racing, and their listeners are generally well versed in many forms of motorsport. By the next day, the meme had spread into the sports car community, with several American LeMans series teams and drivers either sharing or creating their own versions on their Facebook pages. Jalopnik.com, a well-known automotive blog, shared a version of the meme with their story about the rain delay, and also encouraged users to create their own versions
