Normani Dance Challenge refers to a social game in which people post videos of themselves mimicking certain choreography used in Normani's "Motivation" music video. During the music video American singer-songwriter Normani bounces a basketball off her knee, pirouettes while it's in the air and then bounces the basketball off her behind. The set of moves caught fans' eyes in August 2019 when the the music video was released and they immediately began sharing their own attempts at the basketball dance.

Origin

On August 15th, 2019, Normani released the official music video for "Motivation" on YouTube. The video gained over 17 million views and 964,000 likes in four days.

Spread

On August 16th, 2019, Twitter users began pointing out the difficult basketball choreography in the video. Twitter user @CraigSJ posted a GIF of the specific scene saying, "Did you see what she just…" which garnered over 500 likes and 180 retweets in three days.

That same day, Twitter user @Moriuhhh pointed out the that the dance move "is an actual challenge" and included a fan rendition of the moves and the hashtag #motivationchallenge (shown below). The tweet accumulated over 5,300 likes and 700 retweets in three days.

On August 16th, TikTok users also began attempting the choreography with basketballs. The first TikToker to upload a #motivationchallenge video was @thekalenallen whose video gained over 30 likes in three days (shown below).
