Nurses Probably Play Cards for a Considerable Amount of the Day refers to a quote said by the Washington state senator Maureen Walsh during a debate on state bill SHB 1155 which would guarantee hospital nurses uninterrupted breaks. Following the debate, the quote sparked a backlash and was parodied online.
Origin
On April 16th, 2019, a debate on bill SHB 1155,[1] which would grant uninterrupted meal and rest breaks and mandatory overtime protection to hospital nurses, took place at the Washington State Senate.[2] During the debate, Washington State Senator Maureen Walsh argued in support of the amendment to the bill which would exclude small hospitals that have less than 25 beds. During her speech, Walsh said that "[nurses there] probably play cards for a considerable amount of the day."

On April 18th, 2019, Washington State Nurses Association made a blog post titled "Senator states that nurses “probably play cards for a considerable amount of the day” in amending rest breaks bill" in which they critisized the Maureen Walsh's argument.[3] On this day, the blog post went viral, with the Washington State Nurses Association crashing due to the influx of visitors to the website.[4]
On the same day, Facebook user Judie Judnich uploaded two videos with fragments of Maureen Walsh's speech, with the videos gaining over 1.8 million views and 2.1 million views in four days respectively.[5] On Twitter, an upload of the speech gained over 434,000 views in four days.[6]
Following the spread of the news and the videos, the Maureen Walsh's quote sparked an online backlash and was parodied online. For example, on April 19th, 2019, Twitter user @vacuumbiscuits posted a meme which gained over 330 retweets and 1000 likes in four days (shown below, left).[7] A meme posted by Instagram user @zdoggmd on April 20th gained over 38,300 likes in three days (shown below, right).[8]
