Pablo Sanchez is a fictional character from the Backyard Sports video game series. He is best known as an elite slugger in the Backyard Baseball series, growing so notable that he is still remembered as an extremely powerful video game athlete to this day, 24 years since the release of the first Backyard Baseball.

Origin

Pablo Sanchez debuted in the original Backyard Baseball, released October 10th, 1997.^[1] He has appeared in every Backyard Sports game since and has near-maxed out stats in every game. Richard Moe, head of Humungous Entertainment when the original Backyard Baseball was developed, said Pablo was inspired by Miguel Aguilar from the 1976 movie Bad News Bears.^[2]

"In the Bad News Bears, one of the Hispanic little boys never really played. And we thought 'What if all along, he was the best kid on the entire team and just never really got to play because of stereotypes?' And so we thought, 'Let's make the smallest kid possible – and he doesn't speak English – let's make him the best player, just to completely throw in the face all the stereotypes.'"

Sanchez' prowess in Backyard Sports and particularly Backyard Baseball has been widely remembered among sports fans. He has been named one of the strongest video game sports characters in history by multiple publications.^[3][4] He has also been widely remembered in memes online for his athletic prowess. A gimmick Twitter account using his likeness, @yaboypablo,^[5] has over 47,000 followers. He was featured in multiple The Life of Pablo Edits (example shown below, left) and other meme formats (Top 10 Anime List parody shown below, right).

On April 10th, 2015, TheJFKGamer posted a video delving into the history of Pablo Sanchez, gaining over 84,000 views in six years (shown below, left). PBGgameplay posted a Let's Play of the game in 2017 wherein they celebrated Pablo, gaining over 660,000 views (shown below, right).
