People Listening to the Radio in X Year refers to a series of memes in which imagine people listening to music on the radio during important historic events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, with the broadcast being interrupted with news about these events. The memes are based on a viral YouTube sketch "How Rappers be when a trash feature ruins the whole song."

Origin

On June 23rd, 2020, YouTuber[1] RDCworld1 posted a comedy sketch "How Rappers be when a trash feature ruins the whole song." In the sketch, a rapper and two members of his team are enjoying the rapper's soon to be released song, nodding their head to the rhythm. When a poorly executed feature section comes in, the rapper and his assistants visibly stop enjoying the song and lose their smiles. The sketch received over 1.5 million views on YouTube in one month (shown below).

On July 20th, 2020, Twitter[8] user @dietbenloftus posted a meme based on the video imagining people listening to music on the radio on December 7th, 1941, before the broadcast gets interrupted by the urgent news about the attack on Pearl Harbor. The meme received over 3.2 million views, 63,500 retweets and comments and 249,400 likes on Twitter (shown below).

Starting on July 21st, 2020, the format gained notable popularity on Twitter. For example, on that day Twitter[9] user @ItsJabrone and Twitter[2] and Instagram[3] user @jozuintern (__jozu__) posted memes based on the video (@ItsJabrone's post show below). The memes received over 1.6 million views and over 330,000 views on Twiter in six days, respectively.

On July 25th, 2020, iFunny[4] and Instagram[5] user thememewaves posted a meme based on the video which imagined a reaction of white people to the announcement of Barack Obama winning the 2008 presidential election. The meme (shown below) received over 3,300 smiles on iFunny and 600 likes and 2,700 views on Instagram in three days.

Starting on July 25th, the format gained moderate spread on iFunny, with multiple users posting similar jokes about various historic events based on the video. For example, on that day iFunny[6] user Fucboi69pusydestroyer posted a meme imagining children in Iraq listening to the radio during President Barack Obama's presidency. On the same day, iFunny[7] user YouCantCuckTheTuck posted a meme imagining people's reactions to the news of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986.

On September 4th, 2020, YouTube[810] user mervin 536 posted a Nae Nigga Nae Nae version of the meme that received over 5.7 million views in six months (shown below).
