About

aMSa is the alias of Japanese top professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player, Masaya Chikamoto. He is well known in the Melee community for being the best Yoshi player in the world, having obtained notable placements at a multitude of tournaments around the world with his character of choice.

Online History

Chikamoto began his competitive SSBM career in February 2013. After entering a handful of tournaments in his home country of Japan, placing respectively at all the ones he entered at the time, he entered EVO 2013, placing tied for 25th out of 709 entrants in the Super Smash Bros. Melee event. He gained notoriety in the Melee scene for his main of choice, Yoshi, who at the time was considered a low tier character at best, along with taking a game off of Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman in bracket (video shown below). On September 16th, 2013, Chikamoto uploaded a video to his YouTube channel titled "The Red Essence," a video that showcased his tech skill with his character, Yoshi (shown below). The video has garnered over 76 thousand views as of November 2019.

In January 2014, Chikamoto entered Apex 2014, in which he would place an unprecedented 9th out of 629 entrants for Melee. Despite some inconsistent results in major tournaments throughout 2014, Chikamoto managed to garner wins over a multitude of top players, including a win over Mew2King at Kings of Cali 4 (shown below). aMSa's match against Mew2King has garnered over 756 thousand views as of November 2019 and is one of the most viewed matches in competitive Melee history.

Over the years, aMSa has garnered impressive major tournament results. These results have also come with wins over high-level players, including Joseph "Mango" Marquez and Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma, two players, alongside Mew2King, considered to be "Gods" of Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Reputation

Chikamoto has cemented himself as one of competitive Melee's most prolific players, especially with his character of choice. Because of his main character of choice being Yoshi, along with his impressive results with said character, aMSa is also one of the most popular players in the Melee scene. He is a very technical player, considering the high technical ceiling to play Yoshi at a high level. aMSa has also shown to be proficient in other Smash installments as well, including Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, playing as Greninja, where he obtained a win over top professional player Elliot "Ally" Carroza-Oyarce at Apex 2015. Because of his proficiency in playing Super Smash Bros. Melee and Smash for Wii U, aMSa was invited as a playtester for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.[1]

"I Play To Win!"

"I Play to Win," commonly misconstrued as "I Pray to Win," is a phrase used in association with Chikamoto. Originating from his Apex 2014 Salty Suite grudge match against Hendrick "DJ Nintendo" Pilar's Bowser, the phrase has often been utilized by fans and Twitch chat to cheer on aMSa in his matches.
