Dad, How Do I? is a YouTube channel in which Robert Kenney, an American father, instructs others on how to do things that a father might stereotypically know how to do, such as tie a tie or change a tire. The channel went viral shortly after going live, picking up over 1.3 million subscribers less than two months after its first video, thanks in part to Kenney's inspiration for the channel. Kenney's father left his family at a young age and wanted to make a channel for people who may not have a father present in their lives.

History

Robert Kenney grew up moving around America, and his father left at a young age.[1] This inspired his idea to start a YouTube channel where he would give fatherly tips on how to do tasks for kOn April 1st, 2020, motivated by coronavirus-related quarantine, he launched his YouTube channel Dad, How Do I?[2] On April 2nd, he uploaded his first video, "How To Tie A Tie" (shown below, left). As of May 21st, 2020, his most popular video is him thanking his sudden influx of subscribers, which has gained over 930,000 views (shown below, right).



Online Presence

Kenney's channel grew very popular thanks in large part to a thread in /r/YouShouldKnow posted by user AlphaSyncz[3] which gained over 92,000 points. There, one of the top comments mentions how the subreddit post led to him gaining hundreds of thousands of subscribers that day. It was reposted to subreddits /r/momforaminute, /r/ftm, /r/JordanPeterson, and several others.[5] On May 21st, his channel was covered by The Daily Dot,[4] Popsugar,[7] New York Post[6] and others. On May 20th, YouTuber vidIQ analyzed how the channel grew so fast, particularly how it exploded in subscribers relative to a comparatively low amount of views, concluding that the emotional connection people were making with the channel was extraordinary (shown below).
