About
DJ Switch is the stage name of Ghanian DJ Erica Tando, who grew in popularity after winning the talent competition Talented Kidz.
Online History
On February 15th, 2017, a video of DJ Switch rehearsing for the talent competition Talented Kidz in which she's described as the youngest female DJ in Ghana at age nine. The post (shown below, left) received more than 54,000 views.
Several months later, in May 2017, DJ Switch won the eighth season of Ghanaian talent series Talented Kidz (video below, right).
On April 9th, 2018, DJ Switch released the music video for her single "Deceiver." The video (shown below) received more than 94,000 views.
Two months later, on June 22nd, the BBC[1] released a short documentary on DJ Switch (shown below). The video became a popular topic of discussion on social media and was covered by various media outlets, including Billboard,[2] The Daily Dot [3] and more.
Following the release of the video, people online expressed their admiration for DJ Switch. Twitter[4] user @azareaya shared the video and wrote, "Let’s get her famous like y’all did Walmart yodeling boy." The post (shown below, left) received more than 90,000 retweets and 135,000 likes in three days.
Over the next few days, people continued to post about the video (examples below, center and right).
Criticism
In May 2017, Pulse.com[5] questioned whether DJ Switch could be a victim of child labor violations.
