On June 19th, 2019, Twitter user @Blavity^[3] tweeted "A woman named Marijuana Pepsi, who refused to change her name, earned her Ph.D after completing a dissertation on Black names" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 42,600 likes and 13,000 retweets in two days. Due to the tweet's popularity the name Marijuana Pepsi began trending. That day, Twitter user @alysSAWRAH^[4] tweeted, "My high school basketball coach told us he once had a student named Marijuana Pepsi Jackson who became super successful & I thought he might be lying, then like 10yrs later a coworker told the same story. Homegirl been an urban legend in my life for like 15 years 😂😂" (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 182,400 likes and 35,740 retweets in two days. Marijuana Pepsi has been interviewed numerous times for her unusual name saying "I’ve grown into my name because I am a strong woman."^[1][2]
