Pedro Pascal is a Chilean-American actor known for his performances in several major films, including the 2014 HBO medieval fantasy television series Game of Thrones and the 2015–2017 Netflix biographic crime series Narcos. Pedro Pascal has starred as the title character in the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian since 2019 and as Joel in the 2023 live-action adaptation of the game The Last Of Us.

Career

José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal,[1] also known as Pedro Pascal, has extensive stage experience as both an actor and director; he received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award[2] and Garland Award for his role in the International City Theater production of Orphans. He has appeared in the off-Broadway production Maple and Vine[3] by Jordan Harrison and in Shakespeare in the Park's 2006 production of Macbeth. He is a member of New York City's LAByrinth Theater Company.[4]

He gained popularity in May 2021 as YouTube and TikTok users began to put him in various memes in which he laughs and cries to express joy and sadness. On May 14th, 2021, TikTok[5] user @1lvm.4l uploaded a video joking about Pedro Pascal crying, which received 26,700 likes in approximately seven months (below, left). On April 30th, 2021, TikTok[6] user @d4nmk1ra uploaded a similar video, which received over 363,000 likes in about eight months.

Pedro Pascal Edits

The first episode of the live-action adaptation of the game The Last Of Us premiered on January 15th, 2023, starring Pedro Pascal as the protagonist Joel. During and after the premiere, fans of the actor posted fancam videos on TikTok to celebrate his success on the show. One of the main creators responsible for the trend is the TikTok[7] user @dvcree, who posted the first fan edit video (below, left) on January 16th, 2023, receiving 2.4 million plays and 490,000 likes in one month. The user continued to upload more edits of the actor and, on January 20th, 2023, another fancam TikTok[8] (below, right) about Pascal's performance in the Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which garnered 14 million plays in three weeks.

The fancams became a trending topic on TikTok, and some users shared their For You pages filled with edits of the actor, like @reessnyman[9] post (below, left) on January 27th, 2023. The video received 2.8 million plays and 740,900 likes in two weeks. TikTok[10] user @jon4than_hubbxck used a filter to joke about everyone's FY page being Pedro Pascal's edits made by @dvcree. Posted on January 26th, 2023, the video had 1.1 million plays and 367,900 likes in two weeks (below, right)

Pedro Pascal's SNL Skit

On February 4th, 2023, Pedro Pascal hosted the TV Show Saturday Night Live and one of the skits featured a joke about the actor's viral fancams on social media. The official TikTok[11] account of the show, @nbcsnl, shared the skit on the platform on February 6th, 2023, garnering 4.3 million plays 952,900 likes in three days.

Pedro Pascal Laughing Then Crying, or Pedro Pascal Crying, refers to a 2020 viral video of actor Pedro Pascal laughing hysterically and then transitioning smoothly into crying. People began using the clip as a reaction to various sad or ironically sad video clips in early 2021, particularly on TikTok, in association with the track "Space Song" by Beach House. The format spread to Instagram and social media at large in May of that year (shown below).
