Phil Foden Cat Lookalike refers to jokes and memes made about English professional footballer Phil Foden's doppelganger in the form of a white-and-black cat. The jokes comparing Foden with the cat started on Instagram in November 2022, resurfacing on social media every time the footballer's name gets viral attention.

Origin

On November 30th, 2022. Instagram^[1] user @glenn_kitson posted a picture of a cat (seen below) with a humorous caption that says, "Phil Foden is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier League club Manchester City and the England national team. He is considered one of the best young players in the world." The post amassed 28,000 likes in two years.

The cat was later identified as the Marla "Buscemi" Cat on Instagram.^[2]

Spread

The Foden cat meme was popularized on social media in the following years, often being used in jokes about the England footballer. For instance, on August 5th, 2023, TikTok^[3] user @sandfordinner posted the cat's picture (seen below, left) captioning "Phil Foden Cat," which amassed more than 90,000 plays and 1,900 likes in a year.

On April 22nd, 2024, TikTok^[4] user @yzkxi3 uploaded a similar montage video using Foden's lookalike cat (seen below, right), which garnered over 5 million plays and 743,000 likes in three months.
