Popo Killed Simba is a current ongoing fiasco concerning the "shoot first, ask questions later" technique that the police in Zanesville, Ohio used on several exotic animals whose owner released prior to committing suicide. Terry Thompson; age 62; broke open most of the cages and pens on his 73 acre farm on Tuesday, October 18th, 2011. He then shot himself. Sheriff Matt Lutz gave the order to shoot the animals on sight. Many animals were still on Thompson's land, but were shot in order to prevent escape; their pens were damaged, and darkness was coming in a couple of hours.
Among the forty-nine animals slain; eighteen were endangered tigers; seventeen were lions; eight were different varieties of bear; and at least one wolf and camel were also killed. Six animals; three leopards, two monkeys, and a bear survived; according to http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2011/10/18/Wild-animals-loose-in-Muskingum-County.html.
Citizens and animal right's groups alike were outraged over the way the Muskingum County Sheriff Office chose to handle the matter.
Currently, the only known animal left at large is a monkey that is possibly carrying the herpes virus.
