Potaxie is an LGBTQ+ Spanish slang term referring to followers of the Jiafei meme that started in May 2021 on TikTok. The trend became more popular in July 2022, with fans of the meme calling themselves "potaxies" and posting edited videos of Jiafei, which can be distinguished by the emojis of two avocados in the middle of lips, and words formed by x with consonants.

Origin

The word Potaxie was created after a 2020 interview of a woman from the Dominican Republic who went viral by stating that the avocado, as it is known in several South American countries, is “potatsio”.

The slang, popularized by the LGBTQ+ Spanish community, is described by a March 2022 post on Urban Dictionary^[1] as "Jiafei soldiers, talented in Spanish and killing fifx, besties of tilinx."

When the Jiafei meme reached peak popularity on TikTok in May 2021, some users declared the fake persona Jiafei as the leader of the potaxies, creating a sort of TikTok cult. For example, a March 2022 post by @_frases72 explained in Spanish what it means to be a "potaxio." The video received 1.2 million views and 225,000 likes in six months.

In the following months of 2022, the lore surrounding the potaxies expanded to other celebrities like the rapper Nicky Minaj, since she is "also recognized as a worthy representative of the cult", as a June 17th, 2022 post by @lepotaxie7 explained (shown below).
