About

Sad Vandy Kid is the nickname given to a young Vanderbilt Commodores football team fan who was photographed appearing distraught while the team was losing 52-0 against the Alabama Crimson Tide in late September 2017. On Twitter, the picture was subsequently used as a reaction image captioned with jokes about various disappointing and upsetting scenarios.

Origin

On September 23rd, 2017, Vanderbilt played Alabama, one of the strongest teams in the country, at the Vanderbilt University stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. In the 3rd quarter of the game, Alabama had a commanding 52-0 lead, dominating Vanderbilt. CBS cameras caught an image of a fan looking downtrodden while the score displayed on screen. CBS Sports[1] tweeted the image that evening, gaining over 1,600 retweets and 6,500 likes (shown below).

Shortly after CBS sent the tweet out, sports blog SB Nation[2] tweeted the image with the caption "I don't want Bama anymore.", referring to Vanderbilt fans' confidence their team would beat Alabama prior to the game. The tweet gained over 1,300 retweets and 4,000 likes (shown below).

After that, several other fans began using the picture as a reaction image for various situations, not all of which were sports related. Twitter user @KofieYeboah[3] tweeted the picture with the caption "When you stay for the scene after the credits but there isn't a scene after the credits.", gaining over 4,600 retweets and 12,000 likes (shown below, left). Another by @JackMacCFB[4] captioned it "When you send out a fire tweet and get no retweets or favorites" and gained similar numbers (shown below, right).
