Samanthartsoe's NYC Apartment Mystery refers to a series of TikTok videos created by user @Samanthartsoe in which she investigates a source of cold air coming from her apartment and discovers a hole behind her mirror leading to a mysterious, creepy empty space. As she documented her discovery, her videos gripped social media users, who were horrified by the content and compared it to the horror film Candyman.

Origin

On March 3rd, 2021, TikTok user @samanthartsoe posted two TikTok videos in which she investigates a source of cold air in her apartment and discovers a whole behind her bathroom mirror which leads into a mysterious, empty space. In the second video, she summons friends and plans to go into the empty space to investigate. The videos gained over 7.7 million views and 3.8 million views in less than 24 hours, respectively (shown below).

Spread

Samanthartsoe did not provide further updates for several hours, allowing her videos to spread elsewhere online as people speculated what may have happened. Her videos spread on Twitter thanks to reposts from user @cheymillz,[1][2] gaining 1.6 and 1.1 million views on the platform, respectively. The spread of the videos on Twitter led people to compare the saga to the film Candyman, in which the titular horror monster can be summoned by repeating his name in a mirror. User @Urbanzosf[3] tweeted, "Me watching that women climb through her apartment bathroom mirror on Tiktok knowing Candyman is on the other side," gaining over 1,300 retweets and 8,200 likes (shown below, left). User @jacobdavison_[4] tweeted, "Someone has clearly not watched CANDYMAN," gaining over 1,500 retweets and 8,600 likes (shown below, right).

On March 4th, @samanthartsoe posted parts 3 and 4 of her journey (shown below), which show her successfully entering the hole and exploring the area, discovering a "whole other apartment" that is covered in debris. She notes "signs of life" but does not find another person in the apartment. She ends the video by saying she is going to call her landlord and have the hole cemented over. The saga was covered by Dexerto,[5] Newsweek[6] and the New York Post.[7]
