Having devs post there for some inexplicably reason was more than just their claim to fame, it was basically their entire raison d'être.I remember seeing a hilarious post from there a while back where some guy was having a breakdown because a dev posted on GameFAQs instead of NeoGAF. It looked like he was going to lose quite a few good boy points in his ensuing meltdown. GameFAQs of all places! But they keep banning them! It's not even always for wrongthink like when Tom defended freedom of speech, sometimes it's for no apparent reason whatsoever. So what is NeoGAF's identity now that it's no longer the s----- forum where devs post sometimes? There are a million s----- video game forums on the internet, and what sets GAF apart now? The way 1 see it they have self-selected for irrelevancy. All that can possibly be left are the hardcore hugboxers and the sadsacks who have their little social circle there. But what happens to the latter when bans start to break them up? If you post there because of a few friends, and one or two of them gets banned for wrongthink, how long do you keep posting? Just get on IRC or something. And the authoritarians can't thrive without unwashed masses to oppress. Once the bait threads no longer bring out even a single person who'lI disagree with Anita or whatever the outrage du jour is, because there's no one left who disagrees, the ideological purges turn inwardt. Who is not pure enough for this sacrosanct hugbox? Begin the struggle sessions Any community, no matter how large or tight-knit, can only survive so much. As you drive off more and more of the people who bring content to GAF and leave only the parasites who exist to virtue signal in the comments of threads started by others you eventually reach a tipping point. Fewer threads, less activity, harder to set yourself apart when virtue signalling when you all have identical opinions... who wants to stick around a moribund place like that making the same exact posts read by the same handful of people day after day? Eventually even the most devoted are going to move on to reddit or someplace with much more activity. The cruel irony is that those most determined to stamp out disagreement wherever it can be found cannot survive succeeding their mission.
