About
r/AlzheimersGroup is a subreddit where users pretend to have Alzheimers disease and only post edits of the same Garfield comic strip where John says he put out a wildfire in his sock drawer. The subreddit was opened in July 2015 and increased in popularity in 2019, gaining over 75,000 members by April 2022.
History
On January 21st, 2003, a Garfield comic[2] where John says he put out a wildfire in his sock drawer was published (shown below).
On July 30th, 2015, r/AlzheimersGroup[1] was created. The first post[3] was also created on that day by RalphiesBoogers, the creator of the sub, who posted the above comic, writing, "Got a chuckle out of this Garfield comic." The user posted the same comic strip to the subreddit on a near daily basis over the following months.[4][5]
As the subreddit grew over the years, users began posting the comic strip to play into the joke, also sharing edits of the strip and memes referencing it, framed as being posted by someone suffering from Alzheimers. For example, the top posts of all time on the subreddit[6][7] as of April 2022, posted in September and October 2021 respectively, show the comic on the screen of a theater and show a Spotify playlist message spelling out John's dialogue from the strip, gaining over 8,500 and 5,000 upvotes in roughly six months (shown below, left and right).
