About

The SpongeBob Movie Goofy Goober Guitar Mandela Effect or SpongeBob Movie White V Guitar / Peanut Guitar Mandela Effect refers to a Mandela effect where users believe SpongeBob SquarePants plays a white or purple v-shaped guitar or, by some accounts, a star-shaped or double guitar during the "Goofy Goober Rock" scene at the end of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie when in reality, he plays a peanut-shaped guitar. The effect was noted online as early as 2019 and went viral on TikTok in late 2022.

Origin

On November 19th, 2004, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was released in theaters. At the end of the movie, SpongeBob plays guitar during a rock performance of "Goofy Goober Rock." The earliest known upload of the clip to YouTube,[1] posted on November 16th, 2008, shows SpongeBob playing a peanut-shaped guitar (shown below).

On August 1st, 2019, Redditor EDOARDOMASTER made a post to /r/MandelaEffect[2] claiming that he and many others remember SpongeBob playing a v-shaped guitar rather than a peanut-shaped guitar. The user also shared an Imgur[3] screenshot of a Spanish Facebook post making the same claim. The Reddit post gained over 480 upvotes and 200 comments, many agreeing that they don't remember the guitar being peanut-shaped.

One comment[4] under the post links to a clip from the episode "Band Geeks" (shown below) where Sandy Cheeks plays a purple v-shaped guitar during the performance, believing people are confusing the two scenes.

With each new viral Mandela effect realization comes a new wave of people implying that somehow reality is wrong rather than human memory being flawed and warped by time.
It makes sense that people would assume Spongebob was playing a more typical electric guitar, because that's what we'd expect in this situation. People forget it's a peanut guitar either because they were too young to notice it as a kid and haven't watched the movie in a while, or because they never paid much attention in the first place.

I personally always remembered it being a peanut guitar, but…I also had the movie on loop in my room when my family couldn't afford cable. Methinks that might help a little bit.
