Storytelling Dog is an advice animal image macro series utilizing a photo of an adult Samoyed^[1] dog sitting on a chair surrounded by seven puppies. The overlaid text depicts the dog as a storyteller, conveying historical knowledge to the young pups.

Origin

Though the photographer of the Samoyed dog family (shown below, left) is unknown, it has been online since as early as February 12th, 2012, when it was included in a series of cute photos on the dog enthusiast blog The Hydrant.^[2] It was captioned as early as July 2012 by a Pinterest user^[3], depicting the adult telling a story about why dogs dislike cats to the standing puppies.

Spread

In February 2012, the uncaptioned photo was shared on, the NeoGAF forums^[4], FunnyJunk^[5] and The Chive.^[6] In July 2012, the uncaptioned version was posted on 9gag^[7] with the title "Ok…sit down and I'll tell you a story." On March 10th, 2013, Redditor TheNamesAustin posted the first image macro with the name Storytelling Dog to the Advice Animals subreddit^[8], with a caption relating to one often found on cat image macros about catching the red dot from a laser pointer (shown below). The post earned more than 1100 upvotes and nearly 800 points overall.

On March 11th, two separate Storytelling Dog images hit the front page of Reddit with more than 2000 points each.^[9][10] The same day, additional image macros were shared on Memeblender^[11], Pleated Jeans^[12] and Tumblr.^[13] As of March 11th, 30 instances of Storytelling Dog have been shared on the Advice Animals subreddit.^[14]
