Overview
Alfred's Playhouse is a surreal animated web series by Emily Youcis about a mentally ill anthropomorphic dog named Alfred Alfer with multiple personality disorder who invents a world similar to Pee-Wee's Playhouse to cope with his abusive childhood, creating an alter ego named Dictator Pickles who harbors all of his past trauma. Youcis began posting Alfred Alfer animations to Newgrounds in 2006 and posted the three-part Alfred's Playhouse series in December 2007, continuing to post Alfer animations occasionally until 2016. The animations rely largely on shocking and disturbing humor. In 2016, Youcis began involving herself in white nationalist and Nazi circles and seemingly abandoned her plans to make a full-length movie about Alfer as her increasingly problematic opinions and actions made her a controversial figure. The Alfred Alfer animations gained a cult following throughout the 2000s that last into the 2020s, with clips from Alfred's Playhouse and other Alfer animations, along with videos referencing the series, occasionally going viral on TikTok.
History
Alfred Alfer
Animator Emily Youcis posted her first animation featuring the dog Alfred Alfer to Newgrounds[1] on March 23rd, 2006, purportedly while around 16 years old and attending high school. The animation, which gained over 84,000 views in 17 years, features Alfer escaping from getting neutered only to jump through a window and fall to his death (reupload to YouTube shown below).
Youcis would release around 27 total Alfred Alfer animations to Newgrounds between 2006 and 2016, with the June 21st, 2007 Newgrounds[2] upload, titled Rise of Alfred, introducing further lore for the character. In the animation, Alfer gets a job managing a taco restaurant and essentially runs the restaurant like a Nazi dictator. The episode's description reads:
When Alfred Alfer the mentally ill dog gets promoted to manager of Burrito Bell, flashbacks of a neglectful and unloving childhood haunt him and give him an idea – to rule as Dictator. Alfred uses his burnt-out employees as Love Pawns in his sick and twisted desire to fill the emptiness of his childhood and to be loved. Oh yes, did i mention Alfred has Multiple Personality Disorder and he can talk to his dictator alter and that hitler and stalin's souls are stuck in his head for all of eternity and can control him too?
Alfred's Playhouse
Between December 20th and 22nd, 2007, Youcis released the three-part series Alfred's Playhouse on Newgrounds,[3][4][5] becoming some of the most well-known of the Alfred Alfter animations and garnering over a collective 250,000 views in 16 years (reuploads to YouTube shown below).
The surreal animations are about Alfer coping with and repressing his childhood trauma, including incidents of molestation and abuse, in particular one incident involving being molested with a popsicle, by living in "Alfred's Playhouse," a parody of Pee-Wee's Playhouse. The animation features several references to dictators like Hitler and Stalin throughout. In the third part of the series, Alfer's alter ego Dictator Pickles, in whom Alfer has stored all of his traumas and repressed memories, takes him hostage and reminds him of all his repressed trauma.
Post-Alfred's Playhouse
Youcis posted several other animations featuring Alfer between 2007 and 2013, each featuring the same reliance on surrealist, shocking content. The final Alfer animation, titled The Ascent of Alfred, was released on Newgrounds[6] on October 23rd, 2016 (reupload to YouTube shown below).
In the animation, Alfer essentially becomes an alt-right, nationalist figure online. The animation features references to well-known 4chan memes, general memes and figures within alt-right circles, including spurdo sparde, Pepe the Frog and Sam Hyde.
The animation coincides with Youcis' increasingly open purported white nationalist opinions, which turned her into an increasingly controversial figure. Youcis would go on to marry Warren Balogh, who runs the National Justice Party.[7]
Alfred Alfer leaves his decaying, degenerate reality behind and memes his way into Pixelated Immortality, achieving the power and love he's always craved. Join Alfred Alfer, Muammar Gaddafi, Pepe, Spurdo, Ben Garrison, Moonman, Donald Trump, and Alfred's Ultra-Fashy Alter Personality, Dictator Alfred, in the most high-energy segment of the Alfred Alfer Movie Yet!
