Astroneer is an open world sandbox video game developed by System Era Softworks, released for the Xbox One and Windows on February 6th, 2019. The game allows players to explore and colonize a vast, procedurally-generated outer space.
History
Astroneer was developed and published by System Era Softworks and designed by Jacob Liechty. The game was announced in October of 2015[1] and went into early access on December 16th, 2016.[2] At the time, critics favorably compared it to No Man's Sky. [3] Players control an astronaut who travels on foot, by lunar rover, and by spacecraft, crafting on unexplored planets and mining for materials while avoiding hostile plants and avoiding suffocation. The game left early access and was officially released on February 6th, 2019.[4]
Reception
The game saw significant interest after being released in early access.[1][2][3] Upon its official release on February 6th, 2019, the game was quickly popular among players, gaining a 9/10 rating on Steam. [5] Screenrant[6] was less positive, giving the game a score of 3.5/5, praising the game's casual play style, but criticized techinical aspects like frame rate and online connectivity issues. Geekwire[10] stated the game had a steep learning curve players must get past to play effectively.
