About
Bidens hyperborea, mistakenly known as Chudweed, refers to a species of flowering plant native to North America. Bidens hyperborea gained meme attention in 2024 because it phonetically resembled the phrase "Biden's Hyperborea": a combination of U.S. President Joe Biden's last name and Hyperborea, the mythological utopian land said to be inhabited by Nordic-looking Hyperboreans. Also, an alternate name for the plant was said to be Chudweed in a viral Twitter / X post, referencing the slang term Chud and weed. However, "chudweed" was not a real name for the plant and was instead coined by a Wikipedia raid in June 2024.

Bidens hyperborea is the scientific name for estuary beggarticks, a flowering plant native to northeastern North America, characterized by orange and yellow blooms.[1]

The first known posts about Bidens hyperborea were posted to iFunny on April 6th, 2021. One of the posts was a screenshot shared by iFunnier[2] @BenitoNeato who added a bottom caption reading, "JOOOOEEE BAIIIDDDEEN WAKE UP," gaining over 460 smiles in three years (shown below, left).
The other post was a video shared by iFunnier[3] @Hezb which also referenced the Joe Biden Wake Up video, gaining over 120 smiles in three years (shown below, right).

On May 2nd, 2021, Bidens hyperborea was mentioned for the first time on 4chan, surfacing on /x/.[5]
On January 14th, 2022, YouTuber[6] @literallynothinghere9089 posted a Bidens hyperborea video, gaining over 10,000 views in two years (shown below).
On June 12th, 2024, X[7] user @TouhouSexRacism tweeted a screenshot of Google search results for Bidens hyperborea, writing, "I still can't believe this is a real thing," gaining over 3,200 likes in a day (shown below).
Chudweed Wikipedia Raid
On June 13th, 2024, X[8] user @deshmor posted a new screenshot of the Bidens hyperborea Wikipedia page, showing "chudweed" as a newly listed common name. @deshmor wrote, "Found out there is a plant called 'chudweed' with the scientific name 'Bidens hyperborea,'" receiving over 12,000 likes in less than a day (shown below).
