Cocaine Bear (not to be confused with the bear popularly used in I Fucking Love Cocaine memes) is an upcoming, based-on-a-true-story thriller film to be directed by Elizabeth Banks that tells the tale of a black bear in Kentucky who discovered and consumed 70 pounds of cocaine in a duffle bag dropped from an airplane by a local smuggler. The film and its concept proved popular on Twitter, where people made jokes and memes about the film's title and concept.
History
On March 9th, 2021, The Hollywood Reporter[1] reported that Elizabeth Banks was slated to direct a film titled Cocaine Bear, based on a true story of a bear who discovered and consumed 70 pounds of cocaine in Kentucky. No other major details were released about the film at the time.
Online Reaction
After the news was published, the Twitter account @ScreenQueenz[2] posted about it, helping the news spread on social media. The ScreenQueenz tweet gained over 4,500 retweets, 8,600 quote tweets, and 31,000 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below).
"Cocaine Bear"[3] trended on Twitter shortly after as users commented and joked about the film's title and concept. Singer Jason Isbell[4] joked that he would score the movie if they got John C. Reilly to play the bear, gaining over 590 retweets and 8,200 likes (shown below, left). Lindsay Ellis tweeted,[5] "it's been a long time since i've felt excitement for… anything, really, but I didn't think COCAINE BEAR would be what rekindled my interest in film," gaining over 400 retweets and 4,000 likes (shown below, right).
Movie Poster
On November 28th, 2022, the movie poster and release date for the movie came out, with the expected release date being February 24th, 2022, and the tagline being 'GET IN LINE' as a reference to one of the ways to do Cocaine, via lining it up. The release of the poster immediately led to memes being made about the movie, with the Twitter account @Okamics2[6] keeping the Morbius Sweep joke alive with 'Cocaine Bear Sweep' (shown below).
Trailer
On November 30th, 2022, the trailer for Cocaine Bear was released by Universal Studios.[7]

Following the trailer, many joked about the kind of reception that the film might receive. For example, @mikeryan posted about a possible Oscar on November 30th,[8] earning almost 30,000 likes in less than a day (below left) while @SavintheBees posted about the appropriate attire to wear while watching Cocaine Bear (below right) earning almost 2,000 likes in a day on November 30th.[9]
