Part of a series on Jesus. [View Related Entries]

About

I Am Jesus Christ is an upcoming first-person video game in which players will play as Jesus Christ, performing some of the miracles he performed in the Bible and potentially fighting Satan. The game was first announced in 2019 but its release was pushed back until December 2022. Trailers have sparked significant online discussion, with many joking about its premise and referencing it in memes.

History

I Am Jesus Christ is developed by SimulaM and published by PlayWay.[1] The first trailer for I Am Jesus Christ released on December 6th, 2019, gaining over 557,000 views in three years (shown below). The trailer shows a video game version of Jesus performing some of his most famous miracles in first-person mode, getting crucified as his health bar drains to zero, and resurrecting.

There was not much news of the game until August 2022 when Vice[2] reported that they'd played a demo of the game. Vice reported the game will have combat elements, including a boss battle with Satan. One of the mechanics is a "Holy Spirit" meter that Jesus must recharge.

On November 14th, 2022, a trailer for a "prologue" to the full game was released on IGN (shown below). The prologue will release on December 1st, 2022, and the full game will release in early 2023.

Online Presence

As people learned about the game ahead of the prologue's December 1st, 2022, release, many online joked about its premise, oftentimes combining common gaming mechanics with stories about Jesus. For example, on November 16th, IGN[3] joked "Press F to Pay Respects, Press J to Resurrect," gaining over 1,500 retweets and 12,000 likes in one day (shown below, left). Twitter user @Owillis[4] posted several jokes about gamers using typical lingo about the game (shown below, right).

Let's hope Christian Gaming isn't as bad as Christian Cinema. Here's to hoping we get a VeggieTales or Prince Of Egypt and not a Bibleman or a Gaither's Pond. Or a good shitpost, that'd be great, too.
