About
KalyeSerye is a 2015 short soap opera parody aired live within the "Juan for All, All for Juan" segment of Philippine daytime variety show Eat Bulaga! on GMA Network in the Philippines and on GMA Pinoy TV in other countries. The mini-show, as it has evolved, focuses on AlDub β a couple pairing (commonly known in the Philippines as a love team) of GMA Network actor Alden Richards and YouTube celebrity Maine Mendoza (who plays a character known as Yaya Dub) β where the two communicate through Dubsmash and written messages and interact primarily via split-screen frame. Richards is usually located in the studio of Eat Bulaga! in Broadway Centrum, Quezon City, while Mendoza is part of other Eat Bulaga! personalities in various locations within Metro Manila and surrounding provinces.
KalyeSerye fans, especially those who follow the story of Richards and Mendoza, are collectively known as the "AlDub Nation".
This video made by COSMOPOLITANPH attempts to explain the AlDub phenomenon:
This is Alden Richards and this is Maine Mendoza, also known as Yaya (Maid) Dub from GMA 7's KalyeSerye. In case you missed it, they're very famous. As in!
So Maine was playing Yaya in Eat Bulaga!'s "All for Juan, Juan for All" (sic) while Alden hosts in "That's My Bae". Actually, they never met on-set, but one day Yaya Dub saw Alden on-screen and she was super kinilig (the word "kilig" and its derivatives have no exact English translation). The two were then called "Aldub". Fantastic, isn't it?
So did you know, they only see each other on the TV screen. They talk to each other using Dubsmash and "Pabebe Wave", much to the dismay of Lola (Grandma) Nidora, Yaya Dub's employer. She has beautiful eyebrows, doesn't she?
One day, there were two men riding a motorcycle. They stole the Secret Diary of Lola Nidora. They demanded a huge amount of ransom. Lola has no money to pay them. So this is where Frankie comes in, who's like, really rich. To pay the ransom, Lola Nidora arranged for a wedding between Yaya Dub and Frankie. But on the wedding day, Yaya Dub literally fainted and was brought to the hospital in an ambulance. As for the wedding, well, let's just say Yaya Dub and Frankie got married, but the wedding was void because the pastor was a fraud.
In one episode, Yaya Dub and Alden saw each other backstage. They ran towards one another but then a giant wall appeared and separated them. It was Lola Nidora's doing. She's evil, isn't she?
Enter Duhrizz. She is Lola Nidora's granddaughter who hates Yaya Dub, because she likes Alden. So one day, Duhrizz had Yaya Dub kidnapped. Lola Nidora panicked and asked Alden for help. Eventually, things were fixed.
Lola Nidora finally let Alden and Yaya Dub date. But there's a catch: the table was very long and she has to leave early to give medicine for Lola.
Finally, Lola Nidora allowed Alden to court Yaya Dub. But she has three conditions. One, Alden has to sing "God Gave Me You". Two, he has to bring chicharon (fried pork belly or rinds) for Lola Nidora. And three, the two cannot touch and should be one foot away from each other.
Actually, the story hasn't ended yet. But it seems to be a happy ending, isn't it?
History
Mendoza's career took off after she began posting Dubsmash compilation on Facebook. A compilation in which she impersonates Philippine celebrity (and sister of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III) Kris Aquino went viral with one million views overnight. As a result, she began to be called as the "Queen of Dubsmash" in the Philippines. She also had the opportunity to collaborate with many other Dubsmashers and meet Kris Aquino herself.
In 2015, Mendoza caught the attention of the producers of Eat Bulaga! and asked her to audition for the show. According to her, she was originally cast as a lawyer for the "Juan for All, All for Juan" segment but was ultimately cast as the snobbish Yaya Dub (Divina Ursula Bukbukova Smash), a nanny for comedian Wally Bayola's Lola Nidora character. Utilizing her Dubsmash popularity, Mendoza only communicates in the series through dubbing and does not actually speak.
