"ppe btw lel xD" is a phrase that became viral inside the community of a game known as Realm of the Mad God. It is a combination of the two acronyms "ppe" (Pet-player experience, see Origin), "btw" (by the way), and the two slangs "lel" "xD". The meme became viral within the community after the creation of a joke video claiming that all "knights" (see Origin) are notorious for spamming "lel xD" in the chat. "ppe btw" has no clear origin.

Origin and Spread

Realm of the Mad God is an mmo rpg which consists of 14 different classes to play from. One class which was notoriously considered to be overpowered at the time, was the knight. On September 14, 2016, a RotMG youtuber named YinYarn's Barn posted a joke video about the knight class.

In this video, he claimed that knights are notorious for spamming "lel xD" in the chat over and over. Because this claim was false before the video, viewers instantly began to adopt the joke onto the RotMG subreddit and ingame and eventually started "lel xD" memes.
The exact origins of the "ppe btw" portion is still not fully pinned down, but it is believed that at the same time "lel xD" became a subreddit meme, the game community also began to see many players attempt to do a type of gameplay known as Pet-player experienced, or PPE for short. The general rule for PPEs is that the player must build a pro-character without any help except for the player's pet, which is a permanent companion that helps players in battle. Therefore, players began to believe that succeeding in PPEs prove that they are professional players. As PPEs became more popular, many players began to disregard those who claim to be doing a PPE, often being cited as saying "no one cares if you're ppe". In response, many players began to post reddit jokes depicting players holding rich items and shouting "ppe btw" (which means that they are claiming that their character is a PPE character, whether that is true or not, usually if the character actually isn't doing a PPE.) and doing the exact same thing ingame to annoy them. Eventually most of the community picked the joke up and made it a meme.
For unknown reasons, players eventually decided to combine the two meme phrases "lel xD" and "ppe btw" into "ppe btw lel xD".

Usage

"ppe btw lel xD" memes are often either said ingame or put on cartoon templates. Their usage is extremely wide, but usually depict two players talking while one says "ppe btw lel xD" and the other then does something negative against him.
