About

[PROTOTYPE] is a sandbox video game series created by Radical Entertainment and published by Activision. The series follows Alex Mercer, a powerful amnesic shapeshifter who tries to recover his memories while fighting against an infection spreading through Manhattan.

Premise

The game begins with Alex Mercer waking up from a hospital bed, with no memory regarding the events that led him there. He escapes and soon finds out that he has superhuman abilities. Mercer then realizes that as he consumes peculiar individuals, more and more of his past began to resurface. Alex must now fight his way through the military and the mysterious infection that has spread through Manehattan to know who he truly is and how he is interlinked with the biohazard.

Reception

Prototype received praises and good reviews. GameSpot gave Prototype an 8.5/10[10], GamesRadar scored the game as a 4.5/5[11], and Common Sense Media gave the game a 4/5[12], explicitly stating that the game is not for kids. Fans and critics adore the game for the seemingly limitless power and freedom it provides, as well as the immense display of death and destruction present throughout the game.

The sequel, Prototype 2, was not as well received as its predecessor, and did not make much profit.[13] MetaCritic gave the game a 4/5 based on 12 reviews[14], GamesRadar scored the game a 4/5[15], EuroGamer gave the game a 7/10[16], and IGN also gave the game a 7/10[17].

inFamous vs Prototype

One month prior the release of Prototype, Sucker Punch Productions released Infamous for Playstation 3, a game that features a protagonist with super powers in an urban world. The similitarity between the two games started various debates about which game is better or who is the strongest main character, also starting a series of crossover fanart.

On July 21st, 2011, Zero Punctuation uploaded a review of both Infamous and Prototype, featuring the games debate on the late video (shown bellow). As the battle ended in a tie, Yahtzee asked for the development studios from both games a drawing of the rival main character with a girlie outfit, accepting both studios the challange.

Protocreed is the name of the fan made crossover of Assasin's Creed and Prototype, featuring fanart and shipping of the protagonists from the first games of both franchises (Alex Mercer and Desmond Miles).[5][6]
