About
Riverdale is an American television series based on the characters of Archie Comics. The series was adapted for The CW and aired from 2017 to 2023, running for seven seasons and amassing an expressive fanbase over the years. The teen drama was often mocked online for its confusing plot and character interactions.
History
Warner Bros. began development on an Archie Comics feature film[1] in 2013 shortly after got stalled as priorities shifted at the studio, which reimagined the movie as a television series. In 2015, the show's development was moved to The CW, which released the pilot episode of Riverdale on January 26th, 2017.
On December 22nd, 2016. @tvpromos uploaded on YouTube[2] the first trailer of the TV series (shown below), which amassed over 5.2 million views and 30,000 likes in six years.
Reception
The first season of Riverdale received a generally positive response from critics, with an 88% score[3] based on 219 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. On Metacritic,[4] the first season has a score of 68 out of 100 based on 36 critics.
Online Reactions
Since its premiere in January 2017, the series' complex story become the focal point for memes and online discussions on social media. Entertainment website Sreen Rant[5] wrote an article with the best memes about the show on November 28th, 2022, saying "Trying to describe the show to someone who hasn’t watched can be a complicated task."
On May 21st, 2017, the YouTube[6] channel @stillwatchingnetflix posted a video showing the Riverdale cast as memes (shown below, left), which garnered over 5 million views and 165,000 likes in six years. On August 23rd, 2017, YouTube[7] user @FilMonger posted a video compilation showing the Riverdale "Cast Latest Funny Moments," which amassed over 20,000 views and 384 likes in six years.
Last Season Memes
As the show reached its seventh and final season in 2023, fans, and other netizens who weren't following the show, started to share their favorite clips and memes about the TV series. For instance, on August 24th, 2023, X[8] user @paulswhtn posted a clip from the show's third season with the caption "Riverdale I will miss you even tho I haven’t watched since mid-season 3." The post (shown below) amassed more than 351,000 views and 7,500 likes in a day.

On August 23rd, 2023, X[9] user @kirkxxs used the SpongeBob In Silent Hill meme to recollect about a character plotline over the seasons. The post (shown below, left) received more than 6,300 likes and 267 retweets in a day. On the same day, X[10] user @fulldarkblossom posted a "how it started // how it ended" showing pictures of two characters that ended up together in the final episode of the show. The post (shown below, right) amassed more than 6,100 likes and 1,600 retweets in a day.
