Overview

Slay the Princess is a horror-themed video game developed and produced by Black Tabby Games, drawn by Abby Howard and designed by Tony Howard-Arias. The objective of the game is a subversion of the "damsel-in-distress" trope since the player is told to "slay the princess" instead of save her, with failure coming at the cost of the world ending. Initial demos for the game were released in July 2022 and March 2023, with the full game being released on Steam on October 23rd, 2023. Following the demos and eventual full release, Slay the Princess accumulated a notable online following, spawning numerous memes and fan art over the years.

History

Slay The Princess was developed by Black Tabby Games, run by Canadian husband and wife duo Tony Howard-Arias and Abby Howard. The studio has previously made the episodic horror game Scarlett Hollow. The two began developing Slay The Princess in May 2022, releasing a trailer for the game to YouTube[1] on July 26th, 2022 (seen below). The video gathered over 85,000 likes in a year (seen below).

A demo for the game was previewed at PAX East 2023, where it gathered generally favorable reviews.[2][3] The game was then released on Steam on October 23rd, 2023.

Online Presence

The game's subreddit /r/slaytheprincess[4] was created on May 28th, 2022, accumulating nearly 3,000 members by mid-November 2023. The subreddit often hosts memes made by players and fans, as seen in a November 1st, 2023, post by Redditor /u/CapitalismBeLike[5] (seen below, left) and a November 6th, 2023, post by /u/No-Acanthocephala-65 (seen below, right).

A post on the subreddit also shows the creators of the game asking people to pirate the game and buy it at a later time if they wish to instead of watching walkthrough or Let's Play style videos on YouTube (seen below).[6]

If the experience means something to you and you have money down the line, you can always buy a copy later, but we'd prefer you have the best first experience possible!
